INSPIRE Pilot Study

We would like to invite your teen to participate in a research study aimed at preventing risky alcohol use.

Our research team was funded by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health to develop INSPIRE, an innovative game designed to reduce risky alcohol use in teens.

What is INSPIRE?

INSPIRE was designed using innovative artificial intelligence technology to create an interactive story scenario accessed through a videogame-like interface. Players make active choices related to alcohol use in a virtual reality context. The INSPIRE program is designed to build confidence, increase knowledge, and enhance skills in teens to promote healthy, goal-consistent choices in situations involving alcohol use. By participating in this study, your teen would have the opportunity to benefit from this novel intervention – and get paid for their time!

INSPIRE Program Goals

The goal of the program is to empower teens to make informed decisions related to alcohol use that align with their goals, and help them build skills to face challenging situations with more confidence, reflection, and awareness.

The trailer below provides a 90-second sample of the INSPIRE program user experience. Click to watch, or scroll to read more about our research team and how your teen can get involved in this study.

Research Team

The INSPIRE research team is comprised of psychologists, pediatricians, education researchers, and engineers in a joint effort between University of California San Francisco and North Carolina State University.

Why was my teen invited to participate in this study?

We are inviting adolescents from UCSF pediatric primary Care Clinics [between the ages of 14 and 17] who visited primary care clinics between [X and X] to participate in the study.

If my teen participates in the study, what would it involve?

The study involves a 30-minute videogame-like experience in which teens navigate a virtual house party and make in-the-moment decisions as the main character of the game. Teens can participate from home using a computer or tablet [confirm with Jon]. Teens will also be asked to complete a short online questionnaire [before and after playing the game]. [add sum about total time = ~1 hour]. Teens will receive $30 giftcard for their time and participation.
